WIESBADEN - The German economy continued to shed jobs in the third quarter of 2003, but at a slightly lower annual rate than previously, the Federal Statistics Office reported Tuesday.

The German workforce averaged 38.3 million in the quarter, down 1.2 percent, or 479,000 jobs, from the third quarter of last year.

In the second quarter, the job decline had been 489,000, or 1.3 percent below the second quarter of 2002. The first-quarter drop-off was 564,000, or 1.5 percent below the first quarter of 2002.

The office called the figures preliminary, with more detailed data to be issued later in November.
