German defence minister in surprise Afghanistan visit
The recently-appointed minister, a rising star in German politics, will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other officials.Berlin -- German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg flew to Kabul Thursday in a surprise visit that will include talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Berlin said.
The recently-appointed minister, a rising star in German politics, will also meet top NATO and US commander General Stanley McChrystal, as well as Germans serving in the EU police mission in the country.
Germany has more than 4,300 troops in Afghanistan serving with NATO forces in an increasingly unpopular mission.
Berlin has come under pressure, notably from the United States, to provide more troops for the NATO mission in Afghanistan as it faces an increasingly intense war by the Taliban.
