Spanish police found nearly two tonnes of cannabis hidden in soup mix in an abandoned car.

Madrid -- Spanish police said Wednesday they had seized nearly two tonnes of cannabis hidden in tomato soup mix and detained a German couple in connection with their operation.

Police found the 1.7 tonnes of cannabis on July 27 in an abandoned van in Tortosa near Tarragona, police in the northeastern region of Catalonia said in a statement.

The two detained Germans lived near Tarragona and they are suspected of having smuggled the narcotics into Spain from Iran instead of from Morocco, the source of the vast majority of the cannabis that enters the country.

The detained man was already under investigation for suspected money laundering, a local police spokesman said.
