The couple from western Germany were accused of spending their time watching television and taking drugs while ignoring their child.

Giessen -- A German court jailed a couple for life on Friday after their 14-month-old daughter starved to death in their flat in 2007.

The couple from the village of Bromskirchen in western Germany was accused of spending their time watching television and taking drugs while ignoring the girl. Their pet fish and dogs were said to have been properly looked after.

"She was right at the bottom of their list of priorities," prosecution lawyer Lars Streiberger told the court in Giessen, near Frankfurt earlier this week.

The 23-year-old mother took baby Jacqueline to the doctor in March 2007 but she was found to be already dead. She weighed just six kilograms (13 pounds), half the average weight for a child of her age.

In January 2008, another court sentenced the mother to eight years in jail and the 35-year-old father to three years and three months but the Federal Court of Justice ordered a retrial in September.
