Pirates on Saturday hijacked a German chemical tanker and 22 crew after firing automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades during a dramatic boarding, a European naval force said on Saturday.

The crew, made up of 19 Indian sailors, two Bangladeshi and one Ukrainian, were said to be "well" by the force, citing radio contact established by a passing merchant ship.

"Early this afternoon, 8 May, a Marshall Islands-flagged, German owned chemical tanker the Marida Marguerite, of 13,000 tonnes, was hijacked 120 miles south of Salalah (Oman)," the European Union's naval mission said in a statement.
