COLOGNE - German low-cost air carrier germanwings said on Tuesday it is to cooperate with the Polish discount carrier centralwings in building up a new network of services in Europe.

"This could be the start of a concept for other low-cost carriers as well in a pan-European construct," said germanwings managing director Andreas Bierwirth in Cologne.

"We expect a rise in passengers of around 10 percent from this cooperation," he said.

Operations are to begin immediately in the area of sales and marketing with centralwings, a 100 percent subsidiary of the Polish airline LOT.

"The Germany-Poland aviation market has a high strategic importance for us," Bierwirth said. Under the cooperation, all flight connections offered by germanwings and centralwings will be bookable via each others' websites.

Under the cooperation, germanwings will gain Warsaw as its first foreign hub in what will become a pan-European "Wings concept", Bierwirth said. A domestic hub is soon to follow, with Berlin- Schoenefeld airport being given high priority.

For its part, centralwings will be able to offer flight services to the German cities of Hanover, Nuremberg and Cologne.

The Polish carrier currently operates from Warsaw to such foreign destinations as Egypt and Greece, but will soon be able to transfer these services from the charter segment to the low-fare segment of the market, according to Bierwirth.

The cooperation with centralwings poses the second such linkup with a foreign low-cost carrier after the company's cooperation with the bmi Baby airline of Britain.
