German births hit 12-year high
The number of births in ageing Germany rose to around 715,000 in 2014, the highest level since 2002, the Federal Statistics Office, Destatis, said on Friday.
A total 714,966 babies were born in Europe's biggest economy last year, an increase of 4.8 percent over the previous year, Destatis said in a statment.
That was the highest number since 2002, when the number of births had stood at 719,250.
The last time the number of births exceeded 700,000 was in 2004.
At the same time, the number of deaths in Germany fell by 2.8 percent to 868,373, but still exceeded the number of births, the statisticians continued.
The population in Germany has been on the decline for a number of years with one of the lowest birth rates in Europe.
