Hamburg (dpa) - Prosecutors are investigating claims that a German air force major serving in Afghanistan threatened subordinates with a whip, the newspaper Bild reported Saturday.

An air force spokesman told the daily there had been several complaints made against the officer, who heads a technical unit attached to a squadron of Tornado reconnaissance jets based in Mazar-i-Sharif.

The major is alleged to have used verbal and physical abuse against his subordinates and threatened them with a whip.

An air force press spokesman said the officer was under investigation on suspicion of "abusive and humiliating behaviour," according to Bild.

The Tornado jets were deployed in Afghanistan earlier this year to assist NATO-led forces spy out Taliban positions all over the country.

Germany currently has some 3,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan, most of them engaged in reconstruction work in the north of the country.
