Press watchdog IPI has named Carl-Eugen Eberle, director of legal affairs at German public television ZDF, as its new chairman, the organisation announced on Tuesday.

Eberle takes over from Janne Virkkunen, editor-in-chief of the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat, who had chaired the Vienna-based International Press Institute since June 2008.

The decision was taken at a board meeting on September 13, the IPI statement said.

IPI, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, is a network of journalists, editors and media officials, which seeks to promote free speech and media rights around the world.
