BERLIN - A member of the Greens party was shot dead Friday in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, western Germany, but police said they did not believe the slaying was politically motivated.

The 49-year-old deputy mayor of Waldbron, near Karlsruhe, was hit by several bullets after opening the front door of his house early Friday morning, police said. He died later in hospital.

No arrests have been made but a police spokesman said there did not appear to be a link between the shooting and the man's role in the Greens party, which serves in Berlin as German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's junior coalition partner.

"We have a few leads but still no hot trail," said the spokesman.
