3 November 2005, WASHINGTON - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, making his farewell rounds to the United States, met his U.S. counterpart Condoleezza Rice late Wednesday in the U.S. capital.

WASHINGTON - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, making his farewell rounds to the United States, met his U.S. counterpart Condoleezza Rice late Wednesday in the U.S. capital.

The substance of their discussion was not known.

On Thursday, Fischer plans to fly to New York for lunch with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and evening meetings with the leaders of Jewish organizations.

Fischer, a member of Germany's Greens party, will not be part of Germany's next government, which is being negotiated between the centre right Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats.

Fischer was to return to Germany on Saturday evening.
