Gates in whistle-stop visit to Germany
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates landed in Stuttgart, southern Germany, on Wednesday for a brief military ceremony on his way from Afghanistan to Brussels.
Gates was due to oversee the swearing in of General Carter F. Ham as the new commander of the US Africa command, which is based in Stuttgart.
The secretary, who has just spent two days in Afghanistan, is en route to Brussels where he will take part in a meeting of NATO defence ministers to discuss the escalating situation in Libya.
