FREIBURG - Freiburg, the only city in Germany that has twinned itself with a municipality in Iran, affirmed Friday its link with Isfahan, saying that it offered a way to combat the views of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

But Dieter Salomon, Mayor of Freiburg, said official trips by German delegations to Isfahan were currently in abeyance because of Ahmadinejad's stances.

He said cultural exchanges and visits were a way to boost "reform- oriented groups" in Iran and oppose the "Ahmadinejad regime." The cities agreed to the partnership six years ago.

"Both of our cities want to keep the partnership going," said Salomon. However it might have to be reviewed if the conflict between Iran and the West worsened.

Towns in Germany are enthusiastic about twinning and some have half a dozen "sister towns" elsewhere round the globe. The arrangement usually leads to visits and sometimes to concerts or art shows.

Ahmadinejad has been criticized in Germany for questioning the historicity of the Holocaust as well as for pursing a nuclear research project that the West suspects is aimed at building a bomb.
