FRANKFURT - Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt posted record passenger and air cargo figures in August, owner-operator Fraport reported Tuesday.

The company said the airport, the main hub for Lufthansa's domestic flight services as well as for international airlines, handled 4.9 million passengers, up 1.8 percent from a year earlier.

Air cargo volume rose about 14 percent to 142,500 tons, Fraport said.

The figures are the latest pointing to the strong recovery in Germany's civil aviation market.

On Monday, the Federal Statistics Office reported that air passenger numbers in Germany rose by a strong 8.8 percent to 36.4 million in the first half of 2004, led by a strong recovery in Asian air travel.

Last week, Lufthansa reported that its recovery continued in August with a 13.6 percent rise in passenger figures, to 4.5 million, along with a 15 percent rise in air cargo volume, to 142,000 tons in the month. Lufthansa noted that it was the sixth month in a row that it could report double-digit annual growth rates.
