Frankfurt airport passenger numbers rise

FRANKFURT - Germany's largest airport, the Rhein-Main Airport in Frankfurt, handled 4.47 million passengers in June, up 5.1 percent on June 2003 figures, airport owner Fraport AG reported Wednesday.

Together with smaller airports belonging to the company, passenger numbers in the month reached nearly 7.02 million, up 10 percent from June last year, Fraport said.

At the same time, the airports handled 178,657 tons of cargo, a 14.4 percent gain on June 2003, it said.

Besides the Frankfurt airport - Germany's busiest, serving as the main hub of operations for the Lufthansa airline - Fraport also operates airports at Hahn, Hanover, Saarbruecken, Antalya (Turkey) and Lima (Peru).

For the first six months, the airports under Fraport management handled 34.9 million passengers, up 13 percent on the first half of 2003, the company said. Frankfurt airport accounted for 24.3 million passengers, a rise of 8 percent.

Air cargo turnover at the six airports rose 11 per cent year-on- year to almost 1.044 million tons, Fraport said. Air cargoes at Frankfurt airport totalled 834,877 tons, up 12 per cent over the first half of last year.
