Rendsburg, Germany (dpa) - Four army recruits were killed when a train slammed into their car at a level-crossing in the north of Germany, police said Friday.

Witnesses said the vehicle tried to cross the tracks despite the barrier being lowered when the accident occurred shortly before midnight Thursday near Rendsburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The train dragged the car along the track for 35 metres before the vehicle plunged down an embankment, killing the four soldiers instantly.

The recruits, who were on their way to a nearby army base, were aged between 22-25. None of the 70 persons on the train was injured, but the driver was taken to hospital suffering from shock.
