GEISELWIND - An entire family of four was killed early Monday in southern Germany when a lorry smashed into a car at the tail end of a traffic jam at high speed, police said.

Police said both the lorry and the car crashed through a roadside barrier and then tumbled down an embankment and caught fire.

The car's occupants were the father, mother, and their 4-year-old and 5-month-old daughters, police said. The accident scene presented a gruesome picture of the victims burned almost beyond recognition.

"The car was totally demolished and compressed together," the head of the local highway police, Waldermar Koeniger, said. The cab of the lorry was completely ripped away in the collision.

The family were believed to be returning to their home in the northwestern state of North Rhine-Westphalia from holidays when the accident occurred.

The 47-year-old Austrian lorry driver was only slightly injured and taken to hospital. A blood test was taken of the driver, but it was not yet determined whether he may have been drunk, police said. Nor was it yet clear why the driver did not notice the traffic jam.

In the crash, a second lorry was also damaged but the driver was uninjured.
