POTSDAM, GERMANY - A former British building worker who has been a paraplegic since being attacked 10 years ago by German racist youths said in a TV interview Friday that he plans to commit suicide.

The youths threw stones at Noel Martin's car, causing him to veer into a tree on June 16, 1996 in a small town near Berlin.

Martin, who is black, spent weeks in a coma and has been dependent on a wheelchair ever since. The youths have both since served out jail terms.

In an interview broadcast by RBB television, Martin said he planned to take his own life next year on July 23, his birthday. He intends to commit suicide with the help of a pro-euthanasia organisation.

The anniversary of the attack was commemorated with a memorial walk in Blankenfelde-Mahlow, where the assault took place. Around 100 people took part.

Martin called on the people of Brandenburg to take more action against right-wing extremists and urged them to take to the streets to demonstrate their opposition to neo-Nazis.
