FRANKFURT - The board of the German football federation (DFB) said Wednesday that it will meet on Monday in Frankfurt to discuss a successor to national coach Rudi Voeller, who resigned following Germany's group stage elimination at Euro 2004.

It is expected that the 12-strong board headed by DFB president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder will make an announcement that day as to whether preferred candidate Ottmar Hitzfeld, the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund coach, will take up the post.

Mayer-Vorfelder said Tuesday in Lisbon that all important details surrounding the job, which Voeller vacated last Thursday, had been cleared up with the 55-year-old Hitzfeld.

"I am personally of the opinion that he is greatly interested in taking up the post," the federation boss said.

Hitzfeld has said that he will make a decision by the end of the week and is thought to want the full backing of his wife, Beatrix, whom he had promised a year's break from football after being forced to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The DFB will meet Hitzfeld's main conditions for taking on the job, including the appointment of his long-term co-trainer and confidant Michael Henke.

Hitzfeld would lead the national side at least up to the 2006 World Cup. Mayer-Vorfelder, who had met Hitzfeld for talks in Seville, Spain, said Hitzfeld could himself choose the length of his contract.

Wednesday's Sport Bild said Hitzfeld would receive a salary of EUR four million a year.

It is thought Bayern Munich, who are fulfilling Hitzfeld's remaining year on his contract with them, could contribute initially to the coach's wages.
