Berlin (dpa) - The eradication of global poverty "is a question of political will," German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek- Zeul said Tuesday to mark the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Wieczorek-Zeul said the international community was now halfway to its goal, set out at the beginning of the millennium, of halving world poverty by 2015.

"The number of people who have to life off less than a dollar a day has declined significantly," she said, although she noted that Africa needed especial effort.

"The international community must not neglect to make good its promises," Wieczorek-Zeul said.

"The eradication of poverty is primarily a question of the political will of the governments, the economies and the civil societies of North and South, combined with the preparedness to act together quickly," she said.

Noting world per capita defence expenditure of 187 dollars, Wieczorek-Zeul said only 20 dollars a head from the world's population would suffice to achieve the UN's so-called Millennium Goals.

The UN marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Wednesday.
