16 December 2005
BERLIN - Germany said Friday it expects to further develop relations with Iraq following the parliamentary elections there.
A government spokesman, Thomas Steg, said Berlin was pleased at the peaceful conduct of the poll and the high turnout. These were signs of the courage of Iraqis and of their desire to take charge themselves of establishing democracy in their country, he said.
Germany would continue current projects in support of Iraq, he said.
The German Interior Ministry said Friday no date had been set yet for German advisers to resume training Iraqi police at sites in the United Arab Emirates. This would depend on Iraq's own assessment of the value of the training. So far Iraq had not nominated new trainees.
