BRUSSELS - A Commission spokeswoman said the European Union response was being coordinated by the British E.U. presidency as well as the bloc's Brussels-based Civil Protection Mechanism.

The American authorities are accepting help from abroad after initially saying that they did not need foreign assistance.

Assistance being offered by E.U. states included the despatch of international teams of experts in various fields (medical, logistical, communication, search and rescue), equipment (tents, blankets, water purification equipment, water pumps, meals and generators) and transport. 500.000 sets of emergancz rations are also said to be involved.

"The list of E.U. assistance is evolving," the spokeswoman said.

She said countries which were helping the U.S. included Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
