EU agriculture ministers will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday on the outbreak of lethal E. coli and its impact on vegetable producers, an EU presidency spokesman said Monday.

"It has been decided that the EU agriculture and food safety ministers will meet tomorrow at 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) in Luxembourg," Marton Hajdu, spokesman for the Hungarian presidency of the European Union, told AFP.

"They will be taking stock of the situation of the EHEC (strain of E. coli) outbreak both from the market perspective and also food safety," Hajdu said.

The EU commissioner for agriculture, Dacian Ciolos, and the health commissioner, John Dalli, will also attend the meeting. The bacteria has killed 22 people and left another 2,000 ill across Europe.
