The EU agency in charge of disease prevention said Thursday it had identified the strain of a lethal bacteria that has killed 17 people in Europe, mainly in Germany.

"Laboratory results indicate that STEC serogroup 0104:H4 (Stx2-positve, eae-negative, hly-negative, ESBL, aat, aggR, aap) is the causative agent," the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in a statement, confirming its previous suspicion that the very rare strain was responsible for the outbreak.

It added however that the source of the outbreak remained under investigation.
