EU clears 1.2 bn euros for delayed Berlin airport

The European Commission cleared Wednesday 1.2 billion euros ($1.6 billion) in additional state aid to allow completion of Berlin's long-delayed new airport.

The Commission said the extra funding, made necessary by legal rulings in Germany requiring better noise suppression at the airport, was consistent with state aid rules.

The Willy Brandt Airport, also known as Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, will replace the German capital's two current hubs when it is finally opened, more than a year late on October 27, 2013.
