ECB's Draghi to address Spanish parliament next year
European Central Bank head Mario Draghi will address the Spanish parliament early next year, in January or February, an ECB spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.
Draghi "was invited by the parliament of Spain. He has accepted the invitation. We have to discuss the date. It should be in January or February," the spokesman said, declining to say what the subject of the address would be.
The Italian central banker -- who regularly faces a grilling by the European Parliament -- addressed Germany's lower house, the Bundestag, in October, the first time he has spoken to and taken questions from a national parliament.
At the time, he used the opportunity to defend his euro-crisis strategy after his plan to buy bonds of struggling nations came under fire in Europe's top economy.
Spain has battled with the idea of asking the ECB to step in and buy its bonds to drive down borrowing costs but has thus far hesitated, reluctant to accept the stigma and conditions attached to such a request.
