BERLIN - Dutch national Karin Dorrepaal has joined the executive board of the German pharmaceuticals concern Schering AG making her the only woman currently to hold such a high management position at a DAX-listed company.

Dorrepaal, 43, is in charged of diagnostics, supplies and purchasing at Germany's third-largest pharma company. She is the first woman in nearly eight years to hold an executive position at one of the 30 blue-chip companies in the DAX index.

The last woman in such a high position was Ruth Ellen Schneider- Lenne at Deutsche Bank. When she died in December 1996, a man succeeded her on the bank's executive board.

Dorrepaal came to Schering from the international corporate consultants Booz Allen. The diagnostics division at Schering posted revenues last year of EUR 4.8 billion or 27 percent of the company's total turnover.

A recent study in Germany showed that while women make up 47 percent of the country's workforce, only 9.4 percent are to be found in top-level positions.
