Frankfurt (dpa) - A German bank robber who had a fit of bad conscience and took his booty to the police was given a reduced sentence of just 16 months in jail by a German court.

Three days before Christmas 2006, the unemployed joiner, 46, walked into a Frankfurt bank and handed a cashier a crude note demanding money and saying he had a gun. She handed him 7,250 euros (9,680 dollars) and he fled to a cafe to mull his next move.

Feeling bad, he hailed a cab to the nearest police station and turned himself in, along with the money, 45 minutes after the hold-up. Only the cafe bill and the taxi fare were missing.

Judges said they gave him the "top discount" available on bank-robbery sentences because of his contrition, but could not suspend the term because the accused had a long criminal record.
