STUTTGART - Automotive concern DaimlerChrysler announced on Thursday it is recalling 1.3 million Mercedes cars worldwide owing to a range of defects.

The company said certain models of Mercedes cars built between 2001 and the present were to be recalled over defects in the generator, the software governing the electricity, and the brakes.

DaimlerChrysler said the recall measure falls within the new campaign by Mercedes-Benz division boss Eckhard Cordes to boost quality at the luxury carmaker.

Further details were not immediately available.

Automotive analysts note that the image of Mercedes has been dropping among the motoring public over recent years amid quality problems, with foreign brands, particularly Japanese cars, ranking higher in some surveys in terms of reliability and costs.
