Daimler halts Mayback production
German auto giant Daimler said Friday it will halt production of its super-luxury Maybach car, the expensive retro-vintage model aimed at winning customers from Rolls-Royce, the British marque made by rival BMW.
A Daimler spokesman said production would cease in 2013 when the company introduces a new generation S model in its main Mercedes-Benz range.
Daimler resurrected the Maybach in 2002 -- it was first built in 1909 but dropped during World War II -- as a luxury limousine to more than rival Rolls-Royce in size, looks and price, starting at 300,000 euros.
The car, however, only managed sales of around 200 in 2010, out of the 1.27 million chalked up by the company as a whole.
Apart from BMW, Germany's Volkswagen competes in the same rarefied luxury sector with its Bentley and Lamborghini marques.
