PRAGUE - Czech and German police on Tuesday arrested 17 suspected members of a Chinese gang that smuggled at least 800 illegal immigrants through the Czech Republic into western Europe, Czech state police announced.

A police statement said the 'snakehead' gang snuck Chinese and Vietnamese clients into Germany, France and other countries over the past 18 months for about USD 15,000 (EUR 11,500) apiece.

The gang's trail also wound through Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland, stretching as far west as Spain.

The suspects were under the wing of gang bosses based in China and Vietnam, police said. They were arrested in coordinated, early-morning raids in Prague and smaller cities on both sides of the border.

Police seized "large quantities of money in various currencies, account documents from different European banks, documents and mobile phones", the statement said.
