Police seized 140 kilos (309 pounds) of heroin and arrested a Turk and a German who allegedly tried to smuggle it into Croatia from Serbia, officials said Tuesday.

The drug, with an estimated street value of almost six million euros ($6.5 million), was discovered Monday at the Bajakovo border crossing in the men's car, Croatian customs official Davor Petovic told reporters.

The heroin was hidden in 261 small packages stuffed into the chassis of the car, which had German licence plates.

Croatia lies on the so-called Balkan route used by organised crime groups to smuggle drugs, arms and people into western Europe.
