ESSEN, GERMANY - A crane was used to lift a seriously ill man weighing 300 kilograms from the window of his fourth-floor Essen apartment on Tuesday.

Some 30 people from the emergency services took part in the operation after engineers calculated that the wooden stairs in the building would not support his weight, police said.

The 40-year-old man was eased into a reinforced metal cage before being lowered into a heavy duty ambulance that took him to hospital.

The Essen fire brigade had to borrow the vehicle from colleagues in nearby Duesseldorf. It is bigger and more stable than other ambulances and has a tail lift instead of a rear door.
