BERLIN - Consumer confidence in Germany rose to a five-month high in October, a key index released Thursday as falling oil prices helped to boost the mood among consumers in Europe's biggest economy.

Drawn up by the Nuremberg-based GfK market-research group, the forward-looking index climbed to 3.4 points from last month's reading of 3.1 points.

Based on a survey of about 2,000 people, the index was prepared as Germany's main political parties moved towards forging a "grand coalition" government and consequently ending the political stalemate after last month's inconclusive national elections.
