Wilhelmshaven - A German funeral director who is alleged to have recycled expensive coffins, switching corpses into cheap board boxes before cremation, is under investigation for fraud.

In Germany, bodies are normally burned without the mourners present, but in the same finely made casket seen at the funeral.

A prosecutor in Wilhelmshaven, near the Dutch border, said a former employee of the undertaker had alleged the families were charged full price last year and this year for the coffins, but these were saved and sold again.

Inquiries so far showed that only cheap boxes had been cremated with the bodies. The undertaker owns five funeral parlours.
