A German sentenced by an Abu Dhabi court to four years in prison for drug use and 80 lashes for drinking alcohol has only 10 days left to appeal, official WAM news reported on Sunday.

The man, who is of Moroccan descent, has 15 days from the time he was sentenced to appeal the court's decision, which was handed down on August 10, WAM quoted an official at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department as saying.

"The accused is a Muslim, and he admitted to drinking," said the official.

"He also admitted to using drugs... This is a crime the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department is keen to deal with seriously, because it endangers the security and safety of the society," the official added.

Four years is the usual sentence for drug possession, while trafficking can carry the death penalty in the United Arab Emirates. By law, Muslims cannot drink alcohol.
