PARIS - French President Jacques Chirac has praised Franco- German ties as "fundamental and unchanging", following a meeting in Paris Wednesday with German President Horst Kohler.

The ties between the two countries remained an "indispensable engine" in Europe's structure, Chirac said in a statement issued through his spokesman Jerome Bonnafont.

France and Germany would next display their "common vision and ambition for the European project" at the E.U. summit on October 27 and 28 in London, the presidential statement said.

During the hour-long meeting in Paris' Elysee Palace Kohler updated Chirac on Germany's ongoing political stalemate following September 18 elections.

During his trip to Paris Wednesday Kohler was also due to address UNESCO's general conference.
