WASHINGTON - In a sign of improving relations between the United States and Germany, US Vice President Dick Cheney visited the German ambassador's home in Washington on Thursday.

Cheney was invited by the EastWest Institute, an organisation whose board of directors includes German ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger. But it was the first time in several years that a high- ranking member of the US government has called on Germany's diplomatic representatives in Washington.

The EastWest Institute is based in New York. It promotes free enterprise and prosperity and aims to promote democracy by strengthening community development and democratic institutions. The list of previous honourable chairmen of the institute include former US president George H.W. Bush and former German chancellor Helmut Kohl.
