11 November 2004 , COLOGNE - Germany's "fifth season" - Carnival - officially got underway on Thursday when the clocks struck 11:11 a.m. to usher in a period of revelry that will reach its apogee in early February. COLOGNE - Germany's "fifth season" - Carnival - officially got underway on Thursday when the clocks struck 11:11 a.m. to usher in a period of revelry that will reach its apogee in early February.

The traditional start of the carnival season - on the eleventh hour, eleventh minute, eleventh day and eleventh month - began with festivities in the Rhine River valley heartland cities of Cologne and Dusseldorf, as well as a further bastion of carnival revelry, the city of Mainz.

Thousands of people poured into the streets of the cities to start the celebrations which will culminate in the mass street parades and festivities around the country on 8  February known as Fat Tuesday.
