COLOGNE - Colourful Mardi Gras processions which drew hundreds of thousands in towns large and small in Germany on Monday were overshadowed by accidents that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

In the Rhineland city of Oberhausen a woman fell from a parade float and was crushed under its wheels.

In Cologne a horse that was part of one parade contingent panicked and kicked a woman bystander before its rider could bring the animal under control. The woman was rushed to a Cologne hospital with broken bones and internal injuries.

Several hundred thousand onlookers turned out for the procession in Cologne alone, and thousands more were present in Dusseldorf, Mainz and other cities where Carnival is a major annual festival.
