Cardinal Lehmann steps down as head of Germany's Catholic bishops
Cardinal Karl Lehmann announces he is stepping down as chairman of the German Conference of Catholic Bishops on health grounds.

Berlin (dpa) - The 71-year-old cardinal is to leave office next month after more than 20 years at the head of Germany's Catholic bishops.
He was admitted to hospital at the end of last year suffering from a heart complaint, but returned to celebrate the Epiphany on January 6 in the cathedral in Mainz, where he has been bishop since 1983.
Lehmann became deputy head of German bishops in 1985 and was appointed chairman in 1987.
