LONDON - Britain reactivated a special police unit to hunt down suspected Nazi war criminals, the country's Press Association reported Saturday.

Nearly seven years after Britain's only trial of a World War II- era war crimes suspect, an eight-person unit from Scotland Yard is to be given the responsibility to locate members of Nazi Germany's Waffen SS.

The members of the elite Nazi military corps are thought to have taken up residence in Britain after committing crimes in Slovakia, Ukraine and Poland.

The only Nazi war criminal tried in Britain was Anthony Sawoniuk, who was found guilty in 1999 of murdering 18 Jews in 1942 in his homeland Belarus.

He died in prison in November 2005 at the age of 84.
