Fulda - An 11-year-old German boy who shot his stepfather portrayed the shooting as a suicide attempt, shocked police said Monday as the seriously-wounded man, 49, struggled for his life in an intensive-care ward.

The boy phoned police to say his stepfather, a hunting enthusiast, had put two bullets in his own head at their home in the small town of Hosenfeld, central Germany.

But police said the boy took one of the stepfather's pistols and deliberately shot the man, once in the jaw and then through the skull, as he entered their living room last week.

"We realised straight away that something wasn't right," said a prosecutor. The boy has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital, but under German law he is too young to be charged.

Police spokesman Martin Schaefer added, "We don't know why he did it. They seemed to be a happy family." The victim's condition was stable, but he cannot speak.
