BRAUNSCHWEIG - German police said Friday a 12-year-old shot dead his parents and critically injured himself after his father threatened to send him to boarding school if his studying did not improve.

The bloodbath Thursday evening in an apartment in the northern city of Braunschweig was discovered by the family's 14-year-old son.

The father, 66, and the mother, 49, were already dead. Before passing out, the boy told his brother and ambulance workers he had killed them. A Colt pistol and a smallbore pistol were found nearby.

Police said the boy had undergone an operation for head wounds and was in an artificial coma but no longer in danger of death.

They said the father had warned the 12-year-old to improve his marks at school or he would be shifted to a boarding school.
