LONDON - David Bowie underwent heart surgery after falling ill in the northern German city of Hamburg, his spokesman said Friday.

The 57-year-old rock singer underwent angioplasty to clear a blocked artery last month, but details were not made public at the time.

Bowie saw doctors for a trapped nerve in his shoulder after playing a gig in the German town of Scheesel on June 25, and they found "an acutely blocked artery", the spokesman said. Further shows on a European tour were cancelled.

Bowie said through his spokesman that he was annoyed at having missed the gigs, adding the previous 10 months of the tour had been "fantastic".

"Can't wait to be fully recovered and get back to work again. I tell you what, though, I won't be writing a song about this one," he said.

The spokesman said Bowie had last week left the Hamburg clinic where he was treated. His heart problem was identified when he was treated for a trapped nerve which he suffered during a previous concert in Prague on June 23.

Bowie is currently convalescing with his family and hopes to start work next month.
