The remains were found in a flat belonging to a woman who allegedly committed suicide in July.

Berlin -- German police said on Thursday that the body parts of four dead babies had been found in a flat in Berlin belonging to a 46-year-old woman who is believed to have killed herself in July.

The body parts were found by a male acquaintance of the woman while clearing out her apartment, police said in a joint statement with prosecutors, adding that autopsies were being carried out.

"The cause of death is currently not known," the statement said. "Investigators believe at this stage that the dead woman was the mother of the babies."

In recent years there have been a number of high-profile cases of infanticide in Germany, with the most notorious involving a woman jailed for 15 years in 2006 for the manslaughter of eight babies.

Sabine Hilschenz, a divorced, unemployed and alcoholic dental assistant from a depressed area of the ex-communist east of the country, hid the corpses in buckets, flowerpots and an old fish tank at her parents' home.
