BERLIN - A student employment agency has posted security job positions on the Internet with the stipulation that "blacks need not apply", according to a published report Wednesday.

The report in Die Welt newspaper said the online job-seekers website of the Studentenwerk at Humboldt University posted an appeal for security guards at an upcoming home entertainment trade fair in Berlin with the stated proviso that blacks "have no chance of being hired".

Faced with an outcry, a Studentenwerk spokeswoman said it had all been a misunderstanding and that no racist connotations had been intended.

She said the student staffer who posted the job offer on the website had "over-interpreted" the employer's stipulation that applicants be "fluent in German".
