GUTERSLOH - Media concern Bertelsmann AG reported Thursday an income of EUR 1.217 billion euros in 2004, nearly six times the EUR 208 million of the previous year.

Europe's largest media group consisting of publishing, music, television, and multimedia activities said its operating profit reached EUR 1.429 billion, up 40 percent on the EUR 1.026 billion figure in 2003.

The company cited its television division RTL Group as well as its music division Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) and the international media services provider Arvato for having been "key contributors to the rise in earnings".

Consolidated revenues, at EUR 17 billion, were up 1.9 percent from the EUR 16.8 billion in 2003, Bertelsmann reported.

"Bertelsmann delivered a gratifying overall business performance and markedly improved its profitability," said company chairman and chief executive Gunter Thielen.
