Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's Love Parade, an annual procession attracting up to 1 million summer "ravers" with sound trucks booming out electronic dance music, is being cancelled, organizers said Wednesday.

The company blamed the city government for the abandonment of the July 7 event in the city's green heart, saying the city had not issued a permit in time. The company appealed to other European cities to offer to host the event later in the summer.

City authorities rejected the criticism, saying they had been in planning talks with the organizers and were only waiting for documents showing where temporary traffic signs would be placed.

The Love Parade was first held in 1989. Organized as a private business venture, it hit financial problems and did not take place in 2004 and 2005, but resumed last year.

Scantily clad dancers, intoxication and summer sun have been trademarks of the hedonist event, extending its appeal far beyond fans of its techno style of popular music, with young people flocking across borders to attend.

Rainer Schaller, chief executive of the Love Parade GmbH company, said he had secured 3 million euros (4 million dollars) in financing for this year's event and he would like to hear from European metropolises willing to host it. He said Berlin was welcome to apply.

Petra Roland, a spokeswoman for the city's development department, said she did not understand the pullback, as it was common practice not to issue a written permit till three weeks before the event.

She rejected claims that the Life Earth festival on the same day would detract from the parade. She said the date for that environmentalist festival, devised by former US Vice President Al Gore, was in any case not yet final.
