Berlin police offer reward over torched luxury cars
Berlin police Wednesday offered a 5,000-euro ($7,200) reward for information leading to the arrest of arsonists who have been targeting luxury cars throughout the capital.
Fifteen cars, including three BMWs, three Mercedes and an Audi, were torched overnight Tuesday to Wednesday in the upscale district of Charlottenburg in the west of the city, police said.
The previous night, 11 cars went up in flames.
This brought the total number of cars torched this year to 138, 54 this month alone, police said.
Previously arsonists targeted expensive cars in the eastern parts of the capital in the throes of gentrification, but they now appear to have taken their campaign to more traditionally affluent areas.
Police are unsure who is behind the latest attacks, carried out with barbecue starter-packs placed under cars, next to a tyre. But responsibility for earlier arson attacks was claimed by extreme-left splinter groups.
